How Maharashtra sets guard wages
Maharashtra fixes a basic wage for each zone and skill level and adds a special allowance that tracks inflation. The Labour Commissioner revises the special allowance every six months. For July to December 2026 it went up from ₹3,900 to ₹4,134 a month, so every rate rose by ₹234. The basic did not change.
The July 2026 revision was notified on 5 August 2026 but applies from 1 July. When a notification comes out late, pay the difference for the earlier months as arrears.
Security Guards Boards. Under the Maharashtra Private Security Guards (Regulation of Employment and Welfare) Act, 1981, Boards in Greater Mumbai and Thane, and later Pune, Nagpur, Nashik, Raigad, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and some other districts, register guards who work at a factory or establishment without being its own employees. The Board sets their wages, usually higher than the statewide rates, and collects a levy on top for leave, bonus, gratuity and welfare. Agencies can apply for a time-limited exemption. The Board publishes its rates and dearness allowance for each half-year on securityguardsboard.in.
Guards at central government sites, such as nationalised bank branches, central PSUs, railways, airports and ports, get the central sphere rates instead, which are higher.
Maharashtra minimum wage questions
What is the minimum wage for a security guard in Maharashtra in 2026?
From 1 Jul to 31 Dec 2026, the statewide minimum in Zone I is ₹14,155 a month for unskilled, ₹14,990 for semi-skilled and ₹15,766 for skilled workers, including the ₹4,134 special allowance. Zone II and Zone III rates are lower. Guards covered by a Security Guards Board are paid the Board’s rates instead.
How is the daily rate worked out?
Maharashtra notifies monthly rates. Divide by 26 for the daily rate, so ₹14,155 a month is ₹544.42 a day.
Do Security Guards Board rates apply to my guards?
If your guards work in an area with a Board, such as Mumbai, Thane or Pune, at a factory or establishment that is not their direct employer, they come under the Board unless your agency has an exemption. The Board’s wage and levy then apply, not the statewide rates.
When do Maharashtra minimum wages change?
The special allowance is revised every 1 January and 1 July. The next revision is due on 1 Jan 2027. Notifications often come out a few weeks late but apply from the 1st, so arrears are due.
Which zone is Mumbai or Pune in?
Zone I, which covers municipal corporation areas. Note that Mumbai and Pune also have Security Guards Boards, whose rates apply to registered guards.
